Position:Project Manager – Health and Nutrition Sector

Job site: Nairobi (50%) and Somalia Mogadishu or Jowhar when security allows (50%)

Duration: 6 months

Probation period: 3 months

Reports to: Health & Nutrition Coordinator – Nairobi

Status: Collaborator/ Full-time

Purpose/objectives

The Project Manager will have the responsibility of supporting and assisting in the coordination, planning and implementation of proposed health and nutrition projects / activities in the field. The position will require frequent travels to Somalia (50%, with possibility of increment) to assist in the direct management of the projects from field locations. S/he will be mostly involved in managerial, administrative and logistic related activities, although clerical tasks may be assigned as well.

Core Responsibilities

The Project Manager - Health and Nutrition will, under the guidance of Health and Nutrition Coordinator, contribute to the management of all Health and Nutrition Interventions in order to:

  • Assist in the planning, execution, implementation and finalization of projects according to strict deadlines and within approved budget. This will include acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party in order to deliver projects according to plan.
  • Contribute to the elaboration, particularly from an administrative/ logistic point of view, of new projects finalized to the health and nutrition strategy implementation.

· Support the management of INTERSOS-supported Health/ Nutrition facilities/ interventions in Somalia through support in development of M&E and management tools and through training to field staff.

Main administrative/ logistic responsibilities:

· To ensure timely and appropriate support to the Health and Nutrition Coordinator (and if necessary to the other components of the Health and Nutrition sector) in the accomplishment of the regular tasks related to coordination, planning, implementation and development of projects / activities in the field.

· To support the Health and Nutrition Coordinator in the development of progress, interim and final reports to the donors, proposals, required documentation, and presentations.

  • To support the Health and Nutrition Coordinator in the administrative management of all the Health and Nutrition projects.
  • To liaise with INTERSOS Somalia logistic and administrative staff in order to respond to the specific logistic and administrative needs (including procurements and bookkeeping) of the Health and Nutrition interventions
  • To support the Health and Nutrition Coordinator in the various clerical and administrative tasks associated with the management of health and nutrition activities.

Human Resource:

  • Routinely monitor staff performance according to their job description and provide written feedback in a timely manner.
  • Oversee continuous training programs for health and nutrition staff as well as organizing trainings with consultants as per work-plan & budget.
  • Review personnel issues and concerns of health and nutrition staff and assist with determining and implementing solutions.
  • Participate in recruitment of health and nutrition staff as appropriate.
  • Recommend promotions, disciplinary action of health and nutrition staff to Health and Nutrition Coordinator.

Reporting and Coordination:

  • Represent INTERSOS in Health and Nutrition Coordination meetings with implementing partners and attend Health and Nutrition cluster and other Nutrition/Health related forums.
  • Coordinate with the MoH on implementaion of health and nutrition projects.
  • Keep the Health and Nutrition Coordinator informed of all developments through consistent communication and regular reports.
  • Compile weekly, monthly reports and donor reports.

Supply chain

  • Work with the supply chain team to develop accurate and timely quarterly Health and nutrition orders.
  • Monitor utilization of INTERSOS issued health and nutrition supplies; monitor and track INTERSOS Health and nutrition sector assets.
  • Review all Health and nutrition program purchase requisitions.

Finance and grant management

  • Prepare spending, work plans and procurement plans for Health and Nutrition projects based on the available budgets.
  • Attend and participate in monthly budget review meetings, with records of updated expenditure and spending plans.
  • Ensure adherence to the Health and nutrition program budget by reviewing monthly expenditure.
  • Provide recommendations and interventions to correct any identified deviations that impact on budget adherence.

Position requirements

· Degree in Humanitarian Studies, Project Management, or equivalent (Second Class-upper or Masters Degree preferred) from a recognized University.

· Project management background for at least 2-3 years in NGOs settings, preferably in medical/ nutrition projects

· Technically competent with various software programs, particularly Microsoft Office programs

· Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

· Reacts to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently.

· Flexible during times of change.

· Persuasive, encouraging, and motivating.

· Strong written and oral communication skills (English necessary, Somali an asset).

· Strong interpersonal skills.

· Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial.
