2 General context of the project

INTERSOS is a non-profit humanitarian aid organization that works to bring assistance to people in danger, victims of natural disasters and armed conflicts.

INTERSOS is starting its operations in Libya now, in coordination with UNICEF in the frame of the Migration Unit.

INTERSOS has never worked in the country before. The first start-up mission was launched in November 2017.

In recent years the country has been a key springboard for migrants heading for Europe. There are concerns over the rise of Islamist militancy.

A severe humanitarian crisis is taking place in Libya today. It impacts hundreds of thousands of migrants that enter Libya in the attempt to cross the central Mediterranean sea towards Italy. Migrants are hosted in ‘detention centres’ in inhuman conditions. At thesame time, Libya is the most debated scenario for European diplomacy, as the country is struggling to stop the migration influx to Europe through all available diplomatic and economic means.
