Supervision of: Deputy Regional Director and Heads of Mission

2. General context of the project

INTERSOS is an International Humanitarian Organisation with its HQ in Rome, a Branch office in Nairobi and a Representation office in Geneva. The organisational structure is comprised of the Secretary General office, the Departments of Programmes, Finance, Logistics/ICT, Fundraising/Communication, Human Resources and the Internal Audit office. INTERSOS is operational in 17 countries with over 2500 national and international staff worldwide.

INTERSOS assists the victims of natural disasters, armed conflicts and exclusion. Its activities are based on the principles of solidarity, justice, human dignity, equality of rights and opportunities, respect for diversity and coexistence, paying special attention to the most vulnerable people. The present organisational structure of INTERSOS Programmes Department is made of a team of one Director of Programmes, five Regional Directors, four Deputy Regional Directors, a Senior Protection Advisor, the Medical Unit, and the Emergency Unit.

3. General purpose of the position

The Regional Director is responsible for the management, strategic programming, implementation of activities and achievement of objectives related to INTERSOS missions in Kenya/Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as for possible new interventions in the area of her/his responsibility.

The Regional Director represents the Organisation in relation to third parties in the region of assignment based on directives conferred by the Director of Programmes. The Regional Director is also responsible of the correct implementation of INTERSOS procedures and the utilization of the Organization’s tools.

4. Main responsabilities and tasks

Under the supervision of the Director of Programmes and referring to the region of assignment, the Regional Director will:

  • Ensure the coherence of the Programmes portfolio of INTERSOS with the countries strategic plans, the three-year strategic plan, the priorities and the mission of the Organisation
  • Ensure compliance with Organisation and donor policies, procedures and legal constraints
  • Ensure coherence of Programmes ambitions with INTERSOS resource policies
  • Support, and coach, the Heads of Missions (HoMs)
  • Supervise the management of human resources employed in the region of assignment
  • Supervise and monitor the correct and good implementation of the projects
  • Plan, supervise and guarantee, in collaboration with the Regional Finance Director, the missions’ structure costs and their sustainability
  • Supervise the utilization of the tools of the Organisation, and the correct update of the programmes data base
  • Develop, in collaboration with the Communication & Fundraising Department, the annual communication and private fundraising plan of the missions under his/her responsibility
  • Support and follow up of specific dossiers of Programmes Department
  • Lead the preparation of the annual country strategic plans of INTERSOS missions under her/his responsibility
  • Contribute in deciding exploratory missions, starting, reorienting and ending projects through the relevant decision making platforms
  • Develop and exercise a representative function vis-à-vis governments, national and international bodies and sponsors
  • Work on enhancing the humanitarian debate

5. Required profile and experience

Education

Advanced university degree in human sciences or international relations

Professional expeirence

Field working experience of at least 5 years in managing humanitarian programmes with increasing responsibilities

Professional requirements

ITC literacy compulsory

Languages

  • English & French
  • Italian a strong plus

Personal requirements

Strategic vision, leadership, people management, teamwork and flexibility
