INTERSOS is a non-profit humanitarian aid organization that works to bring assistance to people affected by natural disasters and conflicts. Established in 1992 with support from the Italian Federation of Trade Unions, its actions are based on the values of solidarity, justice, human dignity, equal rights and opportunities for all people and respect for diversity and coexistence, paying particular attention to the most vulnerable and the unprotected. In Somalia INTERSOS is active since 1992 responding to emergencies that involve IDPs and returnees populations as well as the host community. INTERSOS currently operates in Banadir, Bay, Middle Shabelle and Mudug regions of Somalia.

Position overview:

The case worker will be responsible for identification, documentation of Unaccompanied and Separated Children (UASC), vulnerable children and their families and provide support and refer to existing services in the target locations.

Main responsibilities:

· Maintain daily contact with community structures and project beneficiaries to ensure the correct procedures and principles are adhered to.

  • Promote adherence to the guiding principles of Child Protection among community focal points, other community-based actors and service providers for safe and ethical referral of cases and ensuring self-determination of the UASC and other child protection cases;

· Case management and follow up of Unaccompanied and Separated childrenafter Identification and documentation, including continuous basic emotional support. Once the cases is identified the case workers is expected to to provide case management based on a child-centred approach:

  1. Create a climate of trust and care;
  2. Rapid case assessment;
  3. Comprehensive best interest assessment, case action planning and implementation;
  4. Case follow up & Review;
  5. Preferred durable solution in discussion with the child and caregiver;
  6. Case closure;

g. Final follow up (confirm the sustainability of preferred durable solution).

  • Ensure the provision of comprehensive information on services available to the client, maintain coordination with service provider focal points, and ensure accompaniment and referral to service adhering to referral SOPs and “need to know” principle.
  • Respect Standard Operating Procedures, Information Sharing Protocol, ensure confidentiality and relevant management of information.
  • Prepare, plan and conduct community awareness raising on Child Protection and education.
  • Facilitate the set up of community based mechanism and referral system to respond to children with protection issues and educational needs.
  • Carry out interviews and conduct follow-up and home visits.
  • Identify vulnerable cases (individuals and families) following the program and selection criteria.
  • Attend community meetings and trainings.
  • Take part in project proposal development by collecting information from community.
  • Ability to deliver information and communicate in a child friendly manner.

Qualifications and experience required:

Ø Minimum grade 8 certificate, previous minimum one year experience as a social worker or case worker with International and national organizations;

Ø Educational qualification as Social Worker, Teacher, Nurse or Midwife preferred;

Ø Understanding of Social Work essential;

Ø Knowledge of community resources and referral pathway;

Ø Strong listening and empathy skills, as well as commitment to supporting vulnerable women and children at risk;

Ø Ability and motivation to work well with local authorities, local leaders and local community;

Ø Ability to carry trainings, workshops, interviews and facilitate community discussions;

Ø Good cooperation skills, ability to work well independently and in a team;

Ø Good problem solving and social skills and creative, to think of alternative solutions;

Ø Stress-resilient to be able to cope with deadlines and complex problems;

Ø Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills;

Ø Computer literate (Word and Excel) preferred;

Ø Fluency in Somali and English language essential;

Ø Willing to work extra hours and available at the weekend for emergency cases.
