JOB SITE: Somalia, with travel in Middle Shabelle

DURATION: 9 months – 6 day work-week

PROBATION PERIOD: 3 months

REPORTS TO: Head Clinician, Jowhar

STATUS: Full-time staff

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE:

INTERSOS has been supporting the Jowhar Regional Hospital (JRH) in 1992. INTERSOS is urgently looking for a Doctor to support activities at the Hospital. The Doctor will work full time within the hospital, performing all clinical duties associated with her/his role and coordinating with doctors, nurses, and other technical and paramedical staff.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

· S/He examine, diagnose and treat patients in the Hospital according to the guidelines and available protocols and using the available tools/ instruments and medical drugs

· S/He will take care of patients providing a good standard of practice and care, treating them as individuals and respecting their dignity, adequately assessing patient conditions, taking account of their history (including the symptoms and psychological, spiritual, social and cultural factors), their views and values

· S/He will adequately assess the patient’s conditions, taking account of their history (including the symptoms and psychological, spiritual, social and cultural factors), their views and values

· S/He will keep work records clear, accurately, and legibly

· S/He will give instructions to nurses about how to work and will keep good relation with colleagues in the ways that best serve patients' interests and will share all relevant information with colleagues involved in your patients’ care within and outside the team, including when you hand over care as you go off duty, and when you delegate care or refer patients to other health or social care providers

· S/He will respect patients' right to confidentiality listen to, and respond to, their concerns and preferences; give patients the information they want or need in a way they can understand, respect patients' right to reach decisions with you about their treatment and care and support patients in caring for themselves to improve and maintain their health

· S/He will provide a good standard of practice and care while diagnose or treat patients promptly providing or arranging suitable advice, investigations or treatment

· S/He will prescribe drugs or treatment, including repeat prescriptions, providing effective treatments based on the best available evidence, taking all possible steps to alleviate pain and distress whether or not a cure may be possible and consulting colleagues where appropriate

· S/He will gather and check for consistency of clinical cards data (i.e. that all the required information has been correctly filled) of all the data collected during the clinical practice with close collaboration to nurses and facilitate that these are properly transmitted to the Data Manager to be included in the database

· S/He will take supervisory role when is on duty in supervising the nurse’s work in the ward and overall ward management and patient care.

· S/He will make OPD consultations and as well in-patients consultations at on admission, daily follow up during the ward, do referrals if needed and upon discharge.

· S/He will work as in-charge doctor during night rota schedule and take relevant decisions on patients care both hospitalized patients and admitting the new patients and should make hand over report to other doctors in the morning of the night shift. Critical cases or death must be reviewed in a meeting discussing what action being taking and the outcome, detailed report must be given for any death case highlighting any negligence happened, corrective actions be suggested.

· S/He will considerate to those close to the patient and be sensitive and responsive in giving them information and support.

· S/He will be readily accessible to patients and colleagues seeking information, advice or support

· S/He is responsible for the efficient and effective use of available resources including drugs, medical and non-medical items and promotes best interest of the patient care practices

· S/He must observe at all times the set working schedules for hospital including start time of OPD consultations, in-patient rounds, and night rota schedules.

· S/He will attend and contribute clinical review meetings, department planning meetings

· S/He will provide on-job trainings, mentoring and coaching to the nurses on the best practices of patient care

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES:

· Excellent Somali language skills (Somali national preferred). Candidates MUST be able to work in the Middle Shabelle Region with Somali-speaking medical staff

· Excellent command of spoken and written English

· Medical Doctor with a minimum of three years of post-graduate medical experience in hospital setting (Masters in Clinical Medicine or Public Health a plus)

PREFERRED SKILLS:

· Three years of medical coordination responsibilities

· Post-graduation specialty (surgery, OBGYN, pediatrics, internal medicine, tropical medicine preferred)

· Experienced in training staff in nutrition and health activities

· Demonstrated experience in personnel management

· Detail-oriented, highly self-motivated, and able to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently

· Computer literate with very good skills in database management
